Air Rhodesia Boeing 720 departing from Salisbury. June 1973.
Rhodesian Air Force base ‘New Sarum’ in the background, Canberras and C47 in view.

This is one of the three Boeing 720s which arrived during April 1973, 'VP-YNL' was named 'Mashonaland', 'VP-YNM' was named 'Matabeleland' and 'VP-YNN' was given 'Manicaland', these were the three main areas in Rhodesia. The 'Shona' are the largest tribal group, the 'Matabele' the second largest, the Zulu offshoot invaders from South of the Limpopo River, the 'Manica' tribe from the Eastern area of the country. I had one very worrying flight in one of these old aircraft when they were even older, in the 1980s with Air Zimbabwe, flying to the UK overhead Paris at 44,000 feet, the highest I have ever been!
