Air Rhodesia C47 VP-YNH and Wenela DC4 on civil apron, Salisbury Airport. February 1971.

The Air Rhodesia Douglas C47B Dakota 'VP-YNH' 'Kariba' is reported to have been withdrawn from service in 1976 (from: 'They Served Africa with Wings' and 'Britain's Rebel Air Force'). This was ex 'G-AMSK'. The Douglas DC4 'Skymaster' of Wenela was one of their fleet of 'A2-' Botswana (formerly 'British' Bechuannaland) registered aircraft used mainly for transporting mine workers from Malawi, Zambia and Rhodesia to the gold fields of South Africa. One of their main flight paths routed over Salisbury, they were a frequent sight in the skies, not so common to see them on the ground. Wenela operated from 1952 to 1977, one of the safest airlines in Africa, 'Africair' by K.J.Fuller is an excellent book and gives the full story of this airline.
