This was one of the two Spitfires saved when the Royal Rhodesian Air Forced acquired jet aircraft. 22 Spitfires were ferried out to Rhodesia in the early 1950s. This particular aircraft was to be restored in the late 1970s for Jack Malloch, an ex RAF Spitfire pilot who served with 237 Rhodesia Squadron during World War 2. Jack Malloch ran the sanctions busting airline, 'Affretair', known in Rhodesia as 'Air Trans Africa' with a fleet of Gabon registered DC7s and a DC8. Sadly, he was killed in this Spitfire in 1982, the crash site was not found for some time, it was thought that he had experienced problems with the weather, as he was a very experienced pilot this is a surprise, but then who knows?
